Howdy all,
I've found an interesting project (American House 08) by William Massie, head of architecture for the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He demonstates how "off the shelf" materials from Home Depot (our Bunnings) and computer design software can be used to create innovative building designs. I see great potential here for generative design in allowing end-users a chance to customise their own building's design easily and cheaply.

Replying to my own post, I also noted that Ponoko links to Paper Inside which has some incredibly complex paper models. Not so much "mass customisation", more a community site where people can share their models.

Yeah, downloads is one thing I was thinking of as well. Thinking back on all the music I've bought over the last couple years, I really haven't bought that many cds, but I'm always buying individual songs. I like the idea of creating mixes and making my own cover art for them. The amount of time that goes into making cover art by hand (I know this from personal experience now) makes me not want to make my own very often, but if I could send off my design to the Awesome Hypothetical Machine to do the work for me, I wouldn't even hesitate.

Nice idea. I could imagine this integrating nicely with a website like Mux Tape so that people could design their own cover art, not just for CDs but also for downloads.

[...] I’ve always blamed the CD, which offers scant space for cover art: less than one-fifth the whole square foot you got with an LP jacket. However, this belief is not entirely universal. [...]

Thanks, guys. Good to know. In the end, I stopped worrying about getting specific colors and used alpha values to tone them down.
